Yoga + Silambam: A Unique Combination

What is Silambam?

Silambam is one of the oldest martial arts in the world, and a proud living tradition of Tamil heritage.

Silambam is an ancient, weapon-based martial art that originated in Tamil Nadu and Eelam — present-day Sri Lanka. Often referred to as the mother of all martial arts, its roots trace back to the time just after the Stone Age. Over thousands of years, Silambam has evolved into not just a system of self-defense, but a complete yogic science of movement, discipline, and inner mastery.

Why Combine Yoga with Silambam?

This ancient martial art includes:

  • Hand-to-hand combat techniques, such as Kuttu Varisai and Adi Varisai
  • Complex footwork patterns, known as Adavukal
  • Weapons training, most famously with the long bamboo staff
  • And Varmam – the ancient Tamil art of targeting vital points for both self-defense and healing

But Silambam goes far beyond physical combat. It is a conscious and spiritual practice, rooted in cultivating self-mastery, self-confidence, and cultural heritage through focused awareness and disciplined movement.

While it improves strength, agility, flexibility, and speed, it also enhances mental focus, memory, intelligence, and emotional balance. Practitioners often leave each session feeling both energized and content.
